Catalyst: A visit to the Alhambra in Granada, Spain inspired this work. This piece was carved in wood and covered in gold leaf. As a mosaic it grew out of a simple cloth background where the depth of the carving is simulated here.
Challenge: Here an attempt was made to replicate the original 12th Century mosaic all the way to the gold leaf finish. The pattern strongly suggests emphasizing the depth, making the growth of the detail more visible.
